So if you are in Nairobi and want to come to Mombasa there are quite a few ways to travel to Mombasa from Nairobi. You can use matatus (15 seaters), shuttles, buses, train or even go by air.
Going by Road
If you are going by road I personally don’t recommend going by matatu or shuttle especially at night. Its best to go with a bus. There are quite a few buses services going to Mombasa. Ranging from 1100 to 1800 (Kenya Shillings).
The 5 buses services that you can use are, in no particular order:
1. Coastal Bus: www.coastalbus.com
2. Modern Coast: www.moderncoast.com
3. Horizon Bus: http://horizonkenya.com
4. Mash Poa Bus: http://mashbus.com
5. Akamba bus: http://www.akambabus.com
These buses have pretty comfortable seating with both day and night services. Some like Mash has even a VIP seating – executive comfortable chairs that recline almost flat like a bed and are really nice. They come at a higher price but if you are travelling often it might be worth it.
Going by Rail
If you can’t afford an air flight but are looking for a comfortable way of travel from the bumpy road you can go by rail. There are 3 classes you can go with using the train; 1st, 2nd and 3rd Class. I have not put in the details for 3rd personally I don’t recommend it at all – but I have put numbers to contact. The train leaves from Nairobi on Monday, Wednesday and Friday leaving on 07:00 pm arriving in Mombasa the next day at 10:00 am.
